CPR Does Save Lives

A frantic call was received on October 30, 1998, from a woman on Thompson Street. Her 69 year old husband was in the family car passed out. Police arrived shortly and confirmed a code 5. Police and the arriving Rockville Medic initiated CPR. Down time for the victim was unknown.
Since the ambulance was tied up on another call, police requested additional help. Firefighters Turkington, Kerr, Schambach, Bova and Sean Vallencia arrived on scene minutes later. After three shocks and 15 minutes of CPR, the victim began spontaneous respiration's on his own. A pulse was determined via the monitor at 136.
The patient was transported to RGH where ER personnel resuscitated him and was admitted to ICU. Three days later the victim was taken off a ventilator.
Good BLS care is the foundation for EMS.
