On February 19, 1999, TN toned Stations 141, 241 and 341 for a reported structure fire at 18 Pleasantview Drive. Car 141 arrived to find a fully involved garage fire with four vehicles also involved with extension to the house. Engine 241, with a crew of three, was first due into the scene. In an effort to stop extension and until more manpower and apparatus arrived, Engine 241 pulled a 1 3/4 line and directed it onto the fire. With ET241 out of service, Command called for an extra engine tank to the scene. Once water supply was established, the fire was quickly knocked down with limited exterior damage to the house. As Assistant Chief Patrizz said at the department meeting following the fire, for all the comments made about Engine 241, being the "little engine that couldn't", the crew and the piece did an excellent job

Five Vernon firefighters recently attended a three- day Connecticut Fire Officer weekend at the National Fire Academy in Emmittsburg, MD. Capt. Steve Scanlon, Lt.'s Steve Eppler, Jeff Schamback, Bill Kerr, and FF Chris Hammick took the seven hour bus ride to the campus of FEMA and the National Fire Administration complex located outside Washington, DC. During the year, the academy holds educational fire officer weekends to bring continuing education courses to officers from around the country. Capt. Scanlon, Lt.'s Eppler and Schambach attended a seminar on Strategy and Tactics. Lt. Kerr and FF Hammick attended the Leadership I seminar. For Steve, Jeff, and Steve it was their first trip to the NFA. All three used the same words to describe the facilities. "Great!" "Beyond my expectations." were some of the phrases tossed around on the trip home. The advanced classroom media and computer facilities was mentioned a couple of times. Everyone thought the information learned would be useful back home. Everyone recommended others to go in the future. As a last note....Capt. Scanlon highly recommends the chocolate pudding!!
