SCBA Update - New Disinfectant from SCOTT

By 2nd Lt. George L. Males, ET241

Our department has purchased and distributed to each fire company a new product from SCOTT Aviation, “Multi Wash Mini for Cleaning and Disinfecting” (“MWM”). This product is to be used on the SCBA facepiece and facepiece regulator for the purposes of killing tuberculocidal, virucidal, germicidal, bactericidal and pseudomonacidal micro-organisms on these parts of the SCBA. The virus will be killed when this spray is applied to the SCBA surface to be cleaned and allowed to stand for a minimum of 10 minutes. The disinfectant kills the virus by penetrating it’s protective protein shell.

This spray should be used each time the SCBA is used. Any dirt, plaster, ash, etc. should be removed first, then the interior of the facepiece should be sprayed (3 pumps) and the opening into the facepiece regulator should be sprayed (6 pumps). The regulator should be swirled around to allow to MWM to coat the internal parts. Excess MWM should be poured out and the regulator should be allowed to stand for the 10 minutes. The SCBA parts should then be rinsed with clean tap water and air dried completely. A copy of the cleaning procedure and MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) was distributed to each company

MWM has a shelf life of 18 months. After this time, the MWM should be replenished with a fresh supply and the old stock should be discarded. Contact George Males for a new supply and any questions on MWM.

LAST BREATH

Facepiece Straps–During your weekly inspections or after use inspections, make sure the “temple” and “neck” straps provide the elasticity they are intended to provide. If they don’t, please drop them off to be replaced. Proper fit could be compromised if these straps are old and not providing the elasticity they are designed for.

Drop Off and Pick Up of Equipment–Just a reminder, all SCBA equipment to be repaired or tested is to be brought to Station 241’s “Work Room”. Label each item to be repaired. Your captain will be contacted when repairs are complete.
