SCBA Facepiece Alert By 2nd Lt. George L. Males, ET241 |

Facepiece Alert: SCOTT “Vista” and AV2000 Facepieces In the past couple months I have noticed when changing the head netting assembly, cracks were found in the face lens where the screws pass through the lens. The cracks or “spider cracks” are from over-tightening the screws. In the past, when screws loosened, they were torqued down. This is NOT an acceptable procedure. When a screw loosens, the entire screw assembly has to be replaced, this assembly can only be set ONCE. If there is a crack in the lens of the facepiece assembly, your uncontaminated air supply is in jeopardy. Other places to look for cracks are around the opening where the facepiece regulator is inserted. Look very closely, as the cracks may be hidden by the ridges around this opening. Replacement Facepieces If you are in need of a replacement facepiece assembly, please let me know, we do have some in stock ready for use. Facepiece Size Small [Green], Large [Black] and Extra Large [Rust] and now “one size fits all”. In the past SCOTT made three different size masks, which could be distinguished by the color of the gasket around lens. In addition, they now make the “Comfort Fit” which can fit all sizes. The newer SCOTT SCBA’s we receive will automatically come with the Comfort Fit facepiece. You may not see much of difference from the facepiece assembly with the black colored gasket, but there is a difference. The new Comfort Fit has a black colored gasket as well, but the gasket itself is noticeably wider all around, allowing small faces and larger ones to fit properly. SCBA Logs Your company’s logs for both Weekly Inspections [Yellow] and After Each Use [Pink] will be collected shortly. These logs will be maintained by the department as official records. As a side note, I have made reviews of these logs on an unannounced basis. On the whole, the majority of the work is being done properly and you are to be thanked for doing your job. Upon collection of all logs, a formal review will be made and a report will be given to the Executive Board on my findings by company. Last Breath: Repairs and Pick Up Please remember to drop off all SCBA repairs to the Station 241 Workshop. All items will be logged in and logged out upon completion of repair or maintenance. Once repair is completed, the company captain will be called for item to be picked up. Please do so promptly. Thanks for your help.
