Saturday, October 6, 2001 - 41
Orchard Street
Lt. Scott McDonald, the
first arriving firefighter on scene, reported a "72" with heavy
fire coming from the basement windows of 41 Orchard Street. Along
with Station 441 and Station 541, Lt. McDonald started a second alarm
assignment to the fire. Lt. McDonald then assisted two residents from the
second floor porch who where trapped by thick, heavy smoke. ET 541
was first in pulling a 250' pre-connect to the rear of the building.
The front of the building was obscured by trees and power lines but both
aerial trucks (Tower 141 and Truck 541) did an excellent job in their
placement. Unfortunately, the building was an older style balloon
construction and the fire was very difficult to contain.
Firefighters remained on the scene for several hours to overhaul and
extinguish hot spots. In all - a good job done by everyone! |

26, 2001 - Namco Building Explosion, Manchester CT
Vernon Fire Department
established a staging area at the Vernon Colony & Golfland complex to
prepare for possible evacuation of Vernon residents or to assist
Manchester Fire with any fire suppression. The staging area was
established at 14:15, shorting after the explosion of the NAMCO building
on Sanrico Drive in Manchester. Due to the close vicinity of the
NAMCO building to the Vernon town line, fire officials were very concerned
what impact the explosion might have on Vernon, especially if the wind
direction shifted. Thanks to Jim Sydoriak from Vernon PD and Larry
King from Vernon Fire for contributing photos. |

7, 2001 - Van Fire - Rt. 83 and Union Street
Just
another typical Saturday afternoon in Vernon - multiple calls going on at
the same time. This van fire was just one of many calls Vernon
responded to that afternoon. Lt. Edgar Jackson was first on scene
awaiting an engine. Engine Tank 141 was first on scene with a driver
and firefighter only. Due to the lack of manpower, Firefighter Jeff
Haynes was assisted by Vernon Police Officer Rich Haynes, who is also a
Vernon firefighter with Engine Tank 141 and ALSO Jeff's father. What
great team work! |

Theo's Restaurant on Route 30. Crews from
ET541, ET441, Tower 141 and Rescue 441 worked to contain a small kitchen
fire to the stove and vent unit. A cooking pot
caught fire due to being left on a stove overnight. |
