About Us

The Town of Vernon Fire Department provides fire, medical and emergency related services in the Town of Vernon. We are one of the largest all volunteer departments in the State of Connecticut, with members ranging in age from 14 to 70. We operate six engines, two tower ladders, one rescue pumper, one heavy rescue and multiple specialty units out of five fire stations across the town. Our multiple ambulances are covered by paid EMTs to handle BLS medical services with the support of the American Medical Response RGH Paramedic and other mutual aid agencies for ALS services.

Emergency services are there 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, handling around 1,000 fire and 5,000 emergency medical calls annually. The Vernon Volunteer Fire Department and Ambulance team derives its strength from a diverse group of dedicated men and women. We are volunteers, people just like you who want to give something back to our community, who want to make a difference in our lives and the lives of others.

New Recruit Training

New recruits are taught in a combination environment with the basic core competencies initially taught at the department level and then advancing to a state fire school for completion of the Connecticut Firefighter I certifications. Skills are taught in a variety of areas including fire suppression, search & rescue, fire behavior, ventilation, ropes & knots and personal protective equipment (PPE).

Professional Advancement

By giving back to your community, you not only gain satisfaction by completing your service, but you continue to build yourself for a better future personally and on your resume. We invest in your future by providing both free and reimbursable class opportunities you may not find anywhere else. Opportunities for advancement exist every day for cross-training across disciplines in the fire service and with chances to promote within our ranks. Train to become a qualified apparatus operator or advance into the role of a company officer.

Give Back to the Community

Our fire department does more than just emergency services. Our private association sponsors annual items such as RHS Project Graduation and local little league teams. We are also well known for organizing and executing our annual Toys for Tikes drive and delivery each year to bring happiness to families in need each holiday season.
